In a First, Remote Jobs Attract a Majority of Applications on LinkedIn

A year ago, remote work may have seemed like a passing phase.

Not anymore. In a first for LinkedIn, remote jobs received 50% of all applications in February 2022 — despite representing less than 20% of all jobs posted.

In other words, candidates are showing far more interest in remote jobs than onsite opportunities.

Why it matters

As many companies seem eager to return workers to the office, candidates are sending a strong message that many of them would prefer to work remotely.

At the same time, hiring demand is rising sharply for jobs that must be done in-person, as companies struggle to fill frontline positions — another sign that candidates aren’t keen to return to prepandemic norms.

What it means for talent professionals

As the labor market remains tight, employers who are looking to hire may face pressure from candidates to keep or expand their remote work policies. At the same time, jobs that must be done in-person may command higher pay and better benefits

How we got here

Remote work unsurprisingly surged after the start of the pandemic. But just as many companies started preparing for a return to the office around the summer of 2021, burnout rates rose and employee happiness fell.

“Return-to-office plans can carry a dangerous subtext,” Amy Lavoie, LinkedIn’s former head of strategic development, said at the time. “It may look to employees that, while their leaders had prioritized their well-being and safety in the pandemic’s first stretch, they’re now focusing on business and advancing their own agenda at all costs, leaving employees’ concerns in the wake.

“Employees are looking to their organizations to value their needs as full human beings," she continued, "and trust them to make decisions about how, when, and where they work.” While plenty has already changed since the summer of 2021, that sentiment still rings true today.

Methodology: Based on paid LinkedIn job posts in the United States in February 2022. Remote job posts accounted for only 19.4% of all paid job posts, while attracting 50.1% of all applications and 45.1% of all views.
