Location: Sierra Leone, West Africa

What You'll be Doing Each Day: 

Establishment and development of Sierra Tropical’s Environmental, Social, Health and Saftey Department including establishing management system objectives and targets; internal and external reporting of ESHS performance metrics; communication of national and local regulatory requirements.

The position is responsible for developing site ISO/OHSAS1 certifications and assuring closure of audit findings on a timely basis. 

  • Implementing E&S management systems, policies and procedures, including the implementation of E&S action plans (where relevant);
  • Oversight of all environmental and social development personnel including community affairs manager, community affairs officers, social impact officers, the foundation staff, administrative assistants, etc;
  • Oversight of overall Corporate Social Responsibility including strategic planning, monitoring, development, and reporting on STL’s Community Development Action Plan (CDAP)
  • Development of reports to various stakeholders on Environmental, Social, and Biodiversity issues, including but not limited to, EPA, MIGA, IFC, & various certification agencies.
  • Regularly monitor company’s compliance with investors’ E&S requirements and policies, including the implementation of agreed action plans
  • Assessing gaps against investors’ E&S requirements/policies and identifying opportunities for value addition.
  • Aligns and develops compliance with procedure and requirements of Environmental ISO 14001 and quality system FSSC 22000 and other standard mandatory require to be used of the organization and participates actively as needed
  • Ensure that E&S rights are embedded into corporate policies, legal agreements, and third-party accountability.
  • Preparation and dissemination of E&S training to organization
  • Continuous training and professional development of local ESHS personnel 

The Skills You'll Need to Succeed: 

The successful candidate will develop and deliver training for subordinate ESHS related personnel, manage interfaces with the public and governmental authorities.

  • Business level of Japanese and English
  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Management, Development Economics,
  • Operational Health and Safety or related field
  • Previous work experience in environmental, OHS, Emergency
  • Familiar with international ESHS guidelines and references (e.g. IFC Performance Standards, World Bank EHS Guidelines, ILO Core Conventions);
  • Preparedness and Response Plan and Stakeholder Engagement Planning
  • Strong communication skills, including report writing (use of PowerPoint and diagrams to present information in a concise format) and oral communication.
