Successful Temping

Temping is a great way to gain experience, learn new skills and make new friends!

Whereas it can sometimes be difficult to secure a permanent role unless your profile exactly matches the job on offer, you will find that temp recruiters have a more flexible attitude, as they are working under time constraints.  Maximise the opportunities that temping affords you:

  • Experience – Temping could be your way to gain office experience or to transfer your skills to a particular role or industry that you are keen to progress into.  It will look good on your CV when you apply for other roles or, who knows, the temp role itself may become permanent.

  • Skills – Use your temp assignment to gain exposure to IT packages you are not familiar with or to gain other skills, which will make you more marketable.

  • Be flexible – Every job includes some mundane elements, but a flexible attitude is highly valued among employers and your enthusiasm could lead you on to greater things.

  • Be punctual and work hard – Even if the job is a stop-gap, you may need to ask your employer for a reference and who knows what useful contacts he or she may have…

  • Talk to your People First consultant – Keep us updated about the new skills and experience you have acquired. If you are looking for permanent roles, it will help us to find you a new job, or if you love where you are temping, we can make enquiries on your behalf to see if the role could become more long-term.

Temping is what you make of it and with the right attitude, you’ll go far. Who knows, it may even improve your social life, too!
