CV Writing Tips

Back

Your CV is your passport to future happiness, in other words, a fantastic job, which you enjoy, - so spend time writing it!

It’s worth remembering the following points:

  • Your CV should not only be eye-catching, but also clear and easy to read

  • Experiment with layout and highlight key skills, experience and achievements, using bullet points, headings etc.
However, it needs to look professional, so don’t go overboard with colour and illustrations!
  • Make sure that all data is accurate and up to date

  • Make sure there are no gaps.  Dates should follow on sequentially, so don’t leave any period unaccounted for

  • Put your education and employment details in order, starting with the most recent or current and working your way back

  • Keep your information concise and to the point. Your CV should ideally be no longer than 2-3 pages. Employers don’t need to know your life history!

  • Be selective and try to think what a potential employer would be most interested in:  Devote more space to your recent experience and the roles which have developed the most valuable skills

  • Check your grammar and spelling. If English is not your mother-tongue, try and ask an English-speaking friend to check this for you.

  • Finally, don’t forget to include your contact details: Name, Address, Telephone Number and email. You might be the ideal person for the job, but if a future employer can’t get hold of you easily, they will select someone else!

  • It is also a good idea to state your current visa status: British, EU Citizen, EEA, HSMP, Working Holiday etc.

There are many resources on writing CVs; use them. Take your time; be accurate.
